The story of Nerja begins long before it became a magnet for sun-seekers and international property investors. In 711 AD, when Muslim rule swept across Spain, the settlement was known as Narixa, a small but vital fishing community nestled in the Axarquía region.
Narixa soon earned fame far beyond its shores for its industrial prowess, becoming a major centre for textile production. By the time the Catholic Kings arrived in 1487, it was a thriving hub, employing an estimated 13,000 people. While the transition of power brought change to the region, and later an order for all non-Muslims to convert or leave, the resulting depopulation was soon remedied by Northern Spaniards from regions like Asturias, Valencia, and Galicia, who arrived to re-populate the town.
This period of upheaval necessitated strong coastal defences. A constant threat of Islamic invaders and pirates led to canons being installed in the Torre de los Guardas. The 16th and 17th centuries saw Nerja solidify its importance. The battle of the Moorish rebellion in nearby Competa (1567) marked the end of major regional hostilities, allowing the town to flourish. Fortifications like La Torrecilla were built to spot pirates.
Early Sugar Factory (1697): The area saw the construction of pre-industrial sugar mills following the Reconquista. The sugar factory completed nearby in 1697 marks a significant period in the region’s agricultural economy, capitalizing on the sugar cane cultivation that dominated the Axarquía landscape.
The spectacular Acueducto del Águila (Eagle Aqueduct) is one of Nerja's most recognizable architectural jewels. Despite a common misconception that it is Roman, this impressive structure was built much later, in the 19th century (circa 1879-1880). It was commissioned by Francisco Cantarero Senio, the owner of the San Joaquín sugar factory in Maro, to supply a constant flow of water to the factory's steam engines and to irrigate the surrounding sugar cane fields. The architect, Francisco Cantarero Martín, designed it in a stunning Mudéjar style, incorporating four tiers of superimposed brick arches (37 in total) that span the Barranco de la Coladilla ravine. It rises to a height of 40 meters. The aqueduct's distinctive feature is the weather vane on its central spire, shaped like a double-headed eagle, which gives it its name. Although the sugar factory closed decades ago, the aqueduct remains an operational piece of historical engineering, still used today to deliver water for local agricultural irrigation. It was restored in the early 21st century following damage sustained during the Spanish Civil War. By the 19th Century, key road construction linked Nerja to Málaga and Almería, fostering financial benefits for its population of around 8,000 residents.
However, the town’s fortunes were sharply tested by a devastating earthquake in 1884, followed by the economically tough years leading up to the Spanish Civil War.
Just when Nerja needed a new catalyst for growth, fate intervened. The end of the tough post-Civil War years was followed by an extraordinary, accidental discovery that would forever reshape the town's destiny: the Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja).
In 1959, five local lads hunting bats stumbled upon a vast subterranean complex dating back some five million years. These immense caverns, stretching over 4,000 metres and housing the world’s largest stalactite, quickly earned international recognition. Today, the incredible Nerja Caves are celebrated for their historical and artistic importance, becoming the third most visited monument in Spain. This discovery cemented Nerja's place on the map, not just for its sun-drenched beaches, but for its profound cultural heritage, attracting tourists and investors alike.
The enduring charm of Nerja lies in its ability to honour its past while aggressively building for the future. Today, the town maintains the picturesque, low-rise architecture of a traditional Andalusian white village, providing a stark and welcome contrast to the high-rise sprawl found in much of the western Costa del Sol.
