Frigiliana

If you are staying in Nerja, Frigiliana is a great place for a day trip. Just 6km from Nerja, the village is heralded as one of the ‘most beautiful in Andalucia’ and rightly so. Wander around the cobbled streets with whitewashed village houses and visit the small local shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts.

Maro Beach

We may have mentioned Nerja beaches but Maro Beach is worth its own paragraph. Voted as the best beach in Andalucia in 2013 and second overall in Spain, the beach boasts crystal clear waters, easy access and breath-taking scenery.

Acebuchal

Known as the ‘lost village,’ Acebuchal sits right in the heart of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. Acebuchal lies on the border of Frigiliana and Competa and is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the busier Costa del Sol resorts. A great place to relax and recharge the batteries.

The Nerja Caves

A must-see attraction in Nerja, the Caves were discovered in 1959 when some local lads found it them chance. Home to the world’s largest column and Neanderthal cave paintings that date back thousands of years, the Caves were one of the most important archaeological finds of our era. The Caves are approximately 5km in length and also host summer concerts.

El Cielo

Translating as ‘heaven’ El Cielo is the highest coastal mountain in the region at 1,508 metres. The challenging hike to the top will get the adrenalin flowing and boasts some breath-taking views of the Costa del Sol from Almunecar to Malaga and to the north-African coastline on clear days.

A day at the beach

With over 320 days of average sunshine each year, it is little wonder so many visitors to Nerja soak up the sun on a choice of stunning beaches.

From the long, sandy beaches of Burriana and El Playazo, to the small covers found in Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, Nerja is a magnet for sun-seekers from all over Spain.

The Balcon de Europa

This famous viewpoint and landmark offers stunning views of the coast and boasts a choice of restaurants, bars and pavement cafes nearby where you can soak up the atmosphere and do some quality ‘people-watching.’

Kayaking in the sea

Sea kayaking is one of the most relaxing and fun outdoor activities in Nerja. Take a kayak from Burriana beach to Maro and you will pass through some of the most beautiful scenery in southern Spain, including waterfalls and hidden coves and caves.

Rio Chillar

A great family attraction, Rio Chillar is perfect for a river walk. The walk gets crowded at weekends and is advisable not to go when it’s too hot but definitely worth a visit. Rio Chillar is one of Andalucia’s most beautiful rivers.

The Eagle Aqueduct

Located just outside Nerja, the Eagle Aqueduct, Acueducto del Aguila, was built in the 19th century and is still in use. The historical significance of the Acueduct has been recognised by the Andalucian Government who have listed it as a ‘Site of Special Cultural Interest.’
